Get a Degree to Become a Special Education Teacher in Kentucky
If you are:
- a teacher in a regular class who wants to move to a special education
classroom Probationary Certificate,
- a social services employee, a mental health worker, or in a related
service and would like to teach in a special education classroom, or
- a person with a Bachelors degree in another field who would like to
become a special education teacher.
The sequence of events for a person interested in becoming a special
education teacher in Kentucky follows:
Then, here are steps you
can take to prepare for your special students.
1. You have interest in teaching special education.
2. Send a letter of interest
to a college or university inquiring about their special education program.
Be sure to find out if you meet the qualifications for enrollment.
3. Apply for enrollment in a
college program.
4. Receive a job offer from a school district and get a temporary
provisional certificate from EPSB. (See 16
KAR 7:010 for a description of certificates.)
5. Begin teaching in a special ed classroom.
8. Obtain admission to a college.
6. Finish your education and receive an education degree.
